Event: Celebrate National Public Gardens Day on May 6th

Now in its third year celebrating America’s public gardens, National Public Gardens Day was created in partnership between the American Public Gardens Association (APGA) and irrigation product and service provider, Rain Bird. The 2011 National Public Gardens Day will showcase the contributions of public gardens with special events at many of the more than 500 North American public gardens.

On May 6th you can take part in National Public Gardens Day at these Philadelphia area gardens:

Longwood Gardens - Bring your own kite and fly it on the Cow Lot. Simple kite kits are available for purchase in our Gardens Shop. Also enjoy the Flower Garden Walk Tour at 1:00 pm (meet at west end of Flower Garden Walk, near the Open Air Theatre). Explore the history and stunning array of flowers and trees along the Flower Garden Walk with a Longwood guide. Longwood is celebrating National Public Gardens Day as part of their Trees, Glorious Trees celebration.

Tyler Arboretum - Tyler Arboretum in Media, Delaware County joins 500 public gardens across the nation to celebrate National Public Gardens Day with interactive programs for all ages - from scavenger hunts in cool tree houses to tours of wildflowers and bluebird discovery stations.
Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania - Enjoy a panoply of colors comprised of witchazels, winterhazels, magnolias, cherries, maples, dogwoods, rhododendrons and azaleas, crabapples, roses, and stewartia. Also check out an Arboretum-wide exhibit called Tree Adventure featuring the dramatic Out on a Limb structure opened to rave reviews at the Morris Arboretum. The central theme of the exhibit explores the relationship between plants and people with its central message: we need trees, and trees need us. Armed with a Passport to Adventure, visitors travel the expanse of the Arboretum’s 92-acre garden to learn the critical role trees play in our environment while having fun engaging with trees.

Get FREE admission to these gardens on May 6th now by visiting http://npga.bhg.com/ today and print your free pass!

"National Public Gardens Day is not only a great time for families and enthusiasts to enjoy the gardens, but the public also witnesses the achievements and expertise provided by public gardens, especially in the area of environmental stewardship,” said Dan Stark, executive director of the APGA. “Regardless of their size, all public gardens share a common commitment to providing outreach programs aimed at engaging their communities and educating future generations on the irreplaceable value of plants.”

In celebration of botanical gardens, arboreta, conservatories, educational gardens and historical landscapes, many of the APGA’s 500 member institutions will mark the day with special events and activities for schools, families and thousands of visitors. Many of the activities will continue through Mother’s Day weekend, offering visitors time to enjoy the beauty of the gardens while learning about each garden’s commitment to education, research and environmental stewardship.

Mark your Calendars: Local Mom to be Featured on ABC's Shark Tank

Former Delco resident now residing in Delaware, Deidrea and self-proclaimed “Hot Mama”, is the woman behind Hot Mama Gowns. On Friday, April 22nd catch her on ABC's hit show Shark Tank at 8pm EST and cheer on local mom! I love stories like this because it just shows how an idea can lead to making dreams come true.

The idea for Hot Mama Gowns was born at the same time her daughter was born in May of 2006. After having a smooth pregnancy and delivery she felt there was one thing she would change. Namely the itchy, chemical smelling, faded hospital gown she was wearing.

Deidra felt that the standard hospital gown was far from stylish, comfortable, or functional. The gown got in the way of skin to skin contact and breastfeeding, two things that were very important to her. Deciding to take things into her own hands she started to brainstorm about the ideal maternity gown that would make women feel and look good at the same time.

With that idea she developed Hot Mama Gowns a stylish mom friendly hospital gown made of 100% pure organic cotton. This gown was designed for breastfeeding moms in mind as well. The design makes breastfeeding easy and discreet which is important with constant visitors and family in the hospital room.

So make sure to mark your calendars, set a reminder and DVRs to watch Shark Tank this Friday, April 22nd at 8pm EST to see Deidrea creator of Hot Mama Gowns and hear about her story.  I wish her much success and I know this won't be the last we hear of Hot Mama Gowns!

To read about Deidrea's experience on Shark Tank check out her blog post HERE and to get your own Hot Mama Gown visit www.HotMamaGowns.com.

To see clips from Shark Tank visit http://abc.go.com/shows/shark-tank.

Review: Lore's Chocolates a Philadelphia Chocolate Tradition

If you visit Lore's Chocolates' website you'll see "A Philadelphia Tradition" and that is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Lore's. Stepping into their shop at 7th and Chestnut in Old City Philadelphia your senses are immediately taken over by the sweet smells and feel of history.
For almost 50 years, Lore’s Chocolates has been using the finest ingredients to make the finest chocolates. One taste and this becomes refreshingly apparent. Whether you've been to their shop or received their chocolates as a gift you know you had Lore's Chocolates. First and second generation chocolatiers, they proudly manufacture their handmade confections on site.

A few weeks ago I was able to visit their shop, tour their on site factory and meet the owners. Their shop is a place I frequented before because if you're in the area you have to stop in. There is not a piece of candy I did not want in the whole store. If you ever wanted anything in a chocolate form Lore's is the place to go. From chocolate covered EVERYTHING to chocolate shaped, hollow or solid, EVERYTHING! I'm serious, I saw a life size chocolate shaped kitten. I don't know about you but I'm a fan of chocolate anything :)
Down stairs below the shop is their on-site factory where many of the goodies above in the shop is prepared. I enjoyed every moment of this experience. Mainly because Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is one of my all time favorite movies. I really felt as though I was fulfilling a childhood dream. There were pots filled with melted milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. There was a machine called the "Enrober" that completely covered just about anything in chocolate. I really wish I knew this machine would be available to me before I came because I would have brought a few random items from home or made a quick stop at Wawa.
    The "Enrober"

Want to give your family the same experience "Willy Wonka" experience? They now offer Lore's Chocolate Parties for children ages 6-12. During a Lore's Chocolate Birthday Party, every child can become a "junior chocolatier" at their historic old city factory. In 90 minutes they'll learn where chocolate comes from, how to mold chocolate and have the opportunity to coat chocolates on the enrobing line. Best thing is that the kids can get to take home what they make. For more info on Lore's Chocolate Parties please e-mail maureen@loreschocolates.com or call 215-284-4306.

    Lore's Nonpareils
No matter what Lore's does with their chocolate you know that you are tasting the best quality. Making Lore's Chocolate a great gift for every occasion. Being family owned has by second generation chocolatiers assures me that they know what they are doing and they are passionate about it. Out of their huge selection my favorite turns out to be their nonpareils. So simple yet I can't get enough of them.

Make sure to hop in this week for a Lore's Chocolate covered Easter Egg with your child's name written on it. Perfect for every Easter basket!

For more information on Lore's Chocolates go check them out at 34 South 7th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106 or visit them online at www.loreschocolates.com

Deal: 50% off on the New "Philadelphia Belle" Riverboat

Last month my husband and I were able to check out the BEAUTIFUL Philadelphia Belle. It made the perfect date night for my husband and I. Setting off from Penn's Landing, the Philadelphia Belle makes her grand debut as the largest vessel of her kind on the East Coast, cruising the Philadelphia waterfront after being artfully restored to late 1800s steam-powered elegance. The food was delicious and we enjoyed live music with amazing views from the river.

With an open-air top deck and three lower decks for dining and entertainment, the ship makes a great venue for seeing the city for the first time, rediscovering favorite sights, and events of all sorts. While on the inner decks, music from Philadelphia International Records, artwork inspired by Philadelphia, and sand art inspired by the boat's niece, stand out in large, stately rooms boasting tin-style paneled ceilings, marble columns, and wide windows. With warmer weather hopefully approaching and sticking around you should definitely take advantage of this great deal from Groupon!

Most cruises include a narrated tour of the Philadelphia waterfront, and eager eaters can cruise and dine with packages that include meals inspired by Steven Starr Events. Enjoy weekday lunch ($42.90 and up), weekend brunch ($42.90 and up), or a weekday night ($69.90 and up) or Saturday-night ($74.90 and up) dinner cruise. Less languished landlubbers ride along with a cruise-only package ($27.95-$34.95), or hop aboard the two-hour sightseeing cruise ($27.95). Like the best school dances, the midnight moonlight cruise on Friday and Saturday nights provides a DJ, a dance floor, and chaperones to quietly talk to until 2 a.m. ($34.95).

River cruises are a luxurious way to relax and see the sights, unlike boarding mermaids equipped with saddles, which usually results in whiplash and water-filled lungs. Cruise the blue in comfort with today's Groupon: for $50, you get $100 worth of cruise options on the brand-new Philadelphia Belle riverboat.

Joachim, her twelve year-old son, accompanies her on lead guitar.

A member of the faculty at the University of the Arts, Brian Sanders has choreographed and performed dance routines throughout the United States and abroad, and he is the founder of the JUNK dance company, a charity dedicated to making dance more accessible to younger audiences. Their show SKINK is a wild and wacky theatrical circus for kids. Set to a wide range of music, from pop to classical, it is a collection of 14 fast-paced vignettes in which the dancers use dance and physical theater to portray characters and creatures of zany proportions—from a 10-foot-tall disco cow on stilts, to a polka-dotted lizard, an old man who dances on his head, and a tennis player whose balls float. The Philadelphia Inquirer calls it a “small-top circus [that] packs big laughs.”

    3:00 p.m. - Benoit Bourque
Recognized for his “charm, smile, and spontaneity” by the Gazetta newspaper in Poland, Benoit Borque is a musician, dancer, singer, and caller specializing in Quebecois traditional dances and bone playing. A resident of Quebec, Borque has performed for more than 25 years and has toured extensively throughout North America and Europe, with popular folk bands including Matapat, La Vent du Nord, and most recently, La Bottine Souriante. His many awards with La Vent du Nord include Best Traditional Artist at the 2006 North American Folk Music and Dance Alliance conference, Best Traditional Album at the 2005 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and Best Traditional Album/Group at the 2001 JUNO Awards.
