A consummate comedian, Nick Griffin has been performing stand-up for more than 20 years, during which time he's toured across the country finding huge laughs in the darker side of life. With his laid-back stage presence -- punctuated by moments of animated frustration -- and his cunningly crafted material, there's a good chance you've already seen Griffin during one of his many television appearances on shows like the "Late Show" (during the David Letterman and Stephen Colbert eras), "Conan", "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" and many more, as well as his own half-hour special on Comedy Central. Whether he's lamenting our collective laziness or pointing out the downsides of adulthood and the single life, Griffin is sure to make you laugh when he headlines Punch Line Philly. [less-]

Stephen Spielberg's "Jaws" is the quintessential summer blockbuster, a cultural landmark and a watershed moment in Hollywood history. However, the production was a disaster. The budget had to be more than doubled due to production issues, harsh conditions shooting on the Atlantic, prop shark malfunctions, ruined camera equipment and more. As a look into the legend behind the legend, "The Jaws Project" is a wicked comedy, an unlikely love story and an unflinching examination of a turning point in American culture. You can witness the stage production all about the seemingly-doomed film production at Philadelphia's Plays & Players Skinner Studio. [less-]

Discover the dark side of downtown Philadelphia history with Grim Philly Twilight Tours and their flagship walking tour, "Vampires, Sex, Ghosts and So Much More". This spooky tour for adults sets out to explore more than two dozen historical sites in just over 90 minutes, including not just familiar landmarks like Independence Hall and the Library of Congress, but also the seedy scenes of former gallows, the red light district, the slave auction blocks and such notoriously haunted structures as City Tavern. No wonder "Vampires, Sex, Ghosts and So Much More" was voted the city's best tour on Channel 17's Philly Hot List. [less-]

No doubt about it: Ben Franklin would have loved to explore the hands-on science museum that bears his name and celebrates his spirit with exhibits as innovative and eclectic as "the first American" himself. Cool immersive experiences abound with three full floors of galleries, live demonstrations, planetarium shows, the Bloom Observatory and exciting traveling exhibits. Take a turn as the engineer for a working 350-ton locomotive at the authentic train factory, explore the giant walk-through heart, try to avoid the "bowling ball of doom" at Sir Isaac's Loft and much, much more, as you learn about engineering, aeronautics, physics, geology and, of course, Franklin's fave -- electricity. And new this year is the 3,600-square-foot permanent exhibit dedicated to the precision and science of sport, "SportsZone", where you can challenge a famous virtual competitor to a race and jump into 20 other interactive experiences. "The Wire"'s Russ Widdall portrays Robert F. Kennedy in the world premiere of "Roseburg", a play that examines the past and present of our country's troubled relationship with gun control. In 1968, two weeks before a gun brought his life to an end, presidential hopeful Robert Kennedy was standing on the steps of the Roseburg courthouse and speaking out about our nation's need for gun control -- a speech that was met with heckles and may have cost him the Oregon primary. Fast-forward 47 years later to 2015, when that same sleepy logging town finds itself in the maelstrom of tragedy after a disturbed student kills nine in a classroom shooting before taking his own life. This New City Stage Company production of "Roseburg" examines the hot-button issue of gun control from both its Vietnam-era protest point-of-view, and its current position in the modern, bipartisan world of social media rants. This production features an ensemble of current Temple University students, as part of the Voices for a New City Educational program. [less-]

A favorite in cities across the country, "The Dinner Detective" comes to Philadelphia's elegant Gallerie Isada to serve up a tasty whodunit along with a seated four-course dinner. And since this popular comic murder mystery is set in the present day, you'll never know whether someone at your table is one of the talented cast of improvisers or simply a fellow guest. In fact, everyone's a suspect, including you. The event starts out with a reception featuring tray-passed hors d'oeuvres, followed by the meal, which includes salad, an entrée and dessert. Between courses you can expect plenty of murder, mayhem and hidden clues coming to light as you puzzle through the crime. The top sleuth wins a prize package at the end of the evening -- not to mention serious bragging rights. [less-]
